Course Units

Core health and safety knowledge for all winter service personnel. Covers hazard identification, risk assessment, safe working practices, pre-use vehicle checks, spreader and plough safety, and emergency procedures specific to winter highway operations.

Supervisory and management skills for winter service operations. Includes route planning, resource allocation, weather monitoring, crew coordination, and managing gritting and ploughing activities across a network.

Prepare and operate winter service vehicles and equipment up to 3500kg, to include agricultural tractors. Covers safe preparation, operation, and post-operation checks for smaller winter service vehicles including tractors commonly used in rural and urban gritting operations.

Prepare and operate winter service vehicles and equipment from 3500kg to 7500kg (medium LGV). Covers the specific handling techniques, operational procedures, and safety requirements for medium-sized gritters and winter service vehicles.

Prepare and operate winter service vehicles and equipment over 7500kg (large LGV). Covers operation of full-size gritter lorries and heavy winter service vehicles, including large spreaders and ploughs on motorways and A-roads.

Prepare and operate National Highways dedicated winter service vehicles. Specialist training specifically for National Highways' dedicated winter service fleet, covering their unique vehicles and operational procedures.

National Highways Rolba Snow-Blower

Prepare and operate National Highways dedicated Rolba 400 or 1000 series snow-blower equipment.

Unit 660

Dedicated Snow-Blower

Prepare and operate dedicated snow-blowers for heavy snowfall conditions and clearance operations.

Unit 670

De-mountable Snow-Blower

Prepare and operate de-mountable snow-blower attachments on winter service vehicles.

Prerequisite: These endorsements apply to the operator units. You must hold a valid operator unit before adding equipment endorsements.

Operate fixed and demountable spreader equipment on winter service vehicles. Covers calibration, spread patterns, and material management.

Operate towed spreader equipment including hitching, manoeuvring, and safe operation of trailed gritting units.

Operate snow plough attachments including angle blades and vee blades. Covers mounting, operation techniques, and clearing patterns for different road conditions.

Operate brine application equipment for pre-wet and direct liquid application. This endorsement is only available where assessed under Unit 013.

Operate chemical de-icing equipment including safe handling, application rates, and environmental considerations for various de-icing agents.
